Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization

Comprehensive support for understanding Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) requirements and completing your application accurately and efficiently.

What is the Canada eTA?

The Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a mandatory digital entry requirement for travellers from visa-exempt countries visiting Canada for short stays. It applies to trips for tourism, business, transit, or certain study purposes.

Travellers from countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, and most EU nations must obtain an approved eTA prior to boarding their flight to Canada. The application is completed online, and once approved, the eTA is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport.

An ETA is required for the following types of travel:

An approved eTA is typically valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows for multiple short visits to Canada during its validity, without the need to reapply each time.

Who Requires an ETA

Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) has been a mandatory entry requirement since 2016 for citizens of most visa-exempt countries. If you plan to visit Canada for tourism, business, transit, or short-term study, you must apply for and receive an approved eTA before flying to Canada.

The eTA is required even for short visits, and each traveller — including minors — must have a valid eTA linked to their passport.

Travellers who hold a valid Canadian visa, as well as Canadian citizens and permanent residents, do not need an eTA. U.S. citizens are also exempt from the eTA requirement, but U.S. permanent residents do require one.

Canada eTA Requirements

To apply for a Canadian eTA, all eligible travelers must fulfill a set of fundamental requirements. The following items are required for every applicant:

Canada ETA Application Steps

The Canada eTA application is a simple online process. Eligible travelers can complete and submit their application in just a few minutes.

Ensure Eligibility

Make sure you hold a valid passport from a visa-exempt country before starting your eTA application.

Complete the Online Form

Enter your travel info and passport details, and answer background questions, then pay securely online.

Receive Your ETA

Most applicants receive a decision within 48 hours. If approved, your eTA will be electronically linked to your passport.

Canda ETA Processing Time

Standard review time

Most applicants receive a decision on their Canadian eTA within 2 days of submitting their application. However, some cases may require additional processing, which can take several days if further documents or verification are needed.

Potential delay factors

If we need more information or something doesn’t meet requirements, we’ll contact you by email.

Canada ETA Decision

After the application is processed, the applicant will receive an email notification with the outcome of their eTA request.

If approved, your Canadian eTA will be sent to you by email and automatically linked to your passport—no printout is needed for travel. The eTA is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows for multiple short visits, typically up to six months each.
Approved
If your application is refused, you’ll be informed of the reason—this could be due to ineligibility, incorrect details, or security concerns. You may need to reapply with corrected information or apply for a visitor visa, depending on your situation and travel purpose.
